It’s a tough time for independent and community hospitals due to financial distress made worse by a challenging payer mix. Many of these hospitals are in rural areas or areas with an aging population that relies largely on Medicare and Medicaid. That puts financial stress on hospitals because the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) reimburses only a portion of the costs incurred by the provider for care delivered. In 2020, hospitals received 84 cents from Medicare for every dollar it spent on patient care and 88 cents from Medicaid for every dollar spent.
